2. Methods of decontamination

Decontamination is a combination of processes that removes or destroys contamination so that infectious agents or other contaminants cannot reach a susceptible site in sufficient quantities to initiate infection, or another harmful response.

When using products and systems for decontamination, you must take into account manufacturer’s recommendations (such as preparation instructions and contact time for disinfectants) to ensure that they are used effectively.

During the risk assessment process, consider if contamination of surfaces, equipment (such as surgical equipment) or other materials (for example dressings, cleaning material, bed linen) with BBVs is a possibility.

You can find more guidance on decontamination of fabrics including clothing and laundering.

If you decide decontamination is needed, you need to identify:

  • the level required (for example disinfection or sterilisation)
  • the most suitable methodology depending on your setting
  • the extent of contamination
  • the possible presence of other microorganisms or organic material
