Our research objectives are to:

  • identify causes, trends and industry/sector issues associated with reported slip and trip injuries;
  • determine levels of baseline knowledge, awareness, attitudes and compliance among key stakeholders, and to track changes;
  • improve knowledge of the causative factors influencing slips and trips, particularly in relation to:-
    • floor/working surfaces, surface coatings and coverings;
    • unevenness and obstructions;
    • the efficacy of cleaning regimes;
    • the effect of contaminants; and
    • the performance of protective systems and aids, including footwear;
    • human factors issues underlying slips and trips
  • develop reliable and reproducible slip resistance measurement techniques for flooring and footwear that correlate to the causative factors identified above;
  • evaluate the impact of the Programme and its outputs (such as the HSE/HSL Slips Assessment Tool)
