RR970 - Follow-up and assessment of self reports of work-related illness in the Labour Force Survey

The Labour Force Survey (LFS) provides estimates of the scale and distribution of work-related ill health conditions across Great Britain. Given its reliance on the self-reporting of these conditions it is of interest to get a better understanding of the nature of the relationship between work and the illness, the characteristics of respondents, details of the conditions reported and the effect they have on individuals' lives. The Work- Related Illness Survey was a multiple stage project designed to acquire this further detail. A sample of respondents reporting an illness in the 2010 LFS were re-interviewed and asked for further details about their illness and its connection to work. With their permission, their doctor was also contacted and asked for further information and a view of the link between the illness and work. An expert panel was convened to review all of this information and make an assessment of the nature of the link between work and the illness. Statistical analysis of all the data collected was conducted in order to provide a clearer understanding of the information yielded by the self-reporting of work-related illness, including the reliability of the assessment of work-relatedness and the impact of the conditions on those affected.
