RR448 - Complex and contentious risk based decision-making in the field of health, safety and the environment Comparative analysis of two UK examples
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has a track record of being at the forefront of developments in risk governance; it has adjusted its approach to regulation in order to ensure that it fulfils its regulatory mandate in a way that is responsive to evolving societal expectations. As part of its efforts in this regard, HSE's Risk Policy Unit (RPU) assisted by the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL), together with several collaborators (given in Appendix 1) submitted a successful proposal to the European Commission (EC) to study innovative processes in the governance of hazardous activities in the chemical and nuclear industries. The full title of the project is "Comparative analysis of risk governance for radiological and chemical discharges of industrial installations" (carried out under the Euratom Framework Programme, contract number FIKR-CT-2001-00168) abbreviated to 'RiskGov'.
