RR216 - A methodology for the assignment of safety integrity levels (SILs) to safety-related control functions implemented by safety-related electrical, electronic and programmable electronic control systems of machines

This contract research report describes the development by the authors, with funding from HSE, of a methodology for the assignment of required Safety Integrity Levels of safety related electrical control systems of machinery. The rationale behind the methodology and how to use it in practice are also explained in some detail. The methodology has been developed and accepted for inclusion in an informative annex of the International Electrotechnical Committee standard IEC 62061: "Safety of machinery Functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable control systems for machinery" currently being drafted.
