RR30 - Development of the ANALOX Hyper-GasTM Diving Bell Monitor

This research arises from an incident in the North Sea in which two divers showed signs of becoming anaesthetised following contamination of the diving bell internal environment, by volatile hydrocarbons from condensate accidentally brought back to the bell. Describes the development of a suitable monitoring device, using infra red technology, which would alert the divers to such a problem. The system consists of two units: a hyper-gas bell monitor containing the infra red hydrocarbon sensor and a depth sensor; and a hyper-gas topside repeater. Prototype testing resulted in small changes to the design to ensure satisfactory function with minimum input from bell occupants. The equipment has now been approved for use in diving bells and is in commercial production.
