For those concerned with the design and use of gamma and electron beam irradiation plants. It covers principally the requirements of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1985 (IRR85) and the associated Approved Code of Practice 'The protection of persons against ionising radiation arising from any work activity'.
These Regulations require radiation exposure to be kept as low as reasonably practicable and within certain specified dose limits. This guidance acknowledges usage in industries such as medical product sterilisation, food treatment, plastics curing and polymerisation, semi-conductor manufacture and gemstone colour changing. It examines broader issues, such as the legalities and administrative arrangements, and more precise considerations including local rules and liaison matters, disposal, contingency planning and probabilistic safety analysis.
