HSE is the enforcing authority for workers in England, Scotland and Wales and also for patient and service users in Scotland and Wales.

In England, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has responsibility for patient and service user health and safety for providers registered with them.

Managing stress in health and social care

Work related stress is a major cause of sickness absence in health and social care leading to an estimated 2.9m working days lost per year. For advice on how to manage stress in the workplace please refer to HSE’s Stress Management Standards.
