World Trade Organization (WTO) sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) notifications

All changes to maximum residues levels (MRLs) are subject to World Trade Organization (WTO) sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) notifications.

The notification process is different for:

  • new and raised MRLs, which are trade enabling measures
  • proposals to lower MRLs, which may impact trade

Proposals to lower MRLs will be subject to a commenting period of at least 60 days before a final decision.

The SPS notification for new and raised MRLs is not usually subject to a commenting period and the notification will be made around the date of enforcement.

WTO SPS notifications are available on the ePing SPS platform (WTO website).

You can narrow the search by searching for United Kingdom as the notifying member.

Defra is the notification authority and enquiry point team for the UK and coordinates WTO SPS notifications.
