Investigation - Stage 3: Prepare the investigation - Additional guidance

Principles of objective setting

Good objectives are SMART:

  • Specific - each objective should clearly state what is to be achieved.
  • Measurable - there needs to be some measure of success against which delivery can be independently judged
  • Achievable - An achievable objective is measurable, theoretically possible (with limitations assessed), and appropriately resourced.
  • Realistic - realistic objectives are achievable, with adequate resources and time to deliver.
  • Time Based - A deadline for delivery should be specified
