Investigation - Stage 2: Decide whether to investigate - Additional guidance

Gas initial enquiries

Pass to the Band 2 with details of any previous gas event/complaint relating to the dutyholder:

  • all reports of a flammable gas incident (Form 2508G1)
  • those dangerous gas fitting reports (Form 2508G2) where: the appliance remains unsafe or previous knowledge of the dutyholder is held or a third party dutyholder is identified or work carried out by an installer was performed over 12 months ago.

For all remaining dangerous gas fitting reports, make further inquiries, where required, to establish the identity of the dutyholder or clarify the incident details.

Then, close the inquiry:

  • where it is established that the event is not reportable or has been incorrectly reported & notify the changes to the ICC
  • where a dutyholder cannot be identified
  • following issue of the appropriate warning letter to the unregistered installer who performed the work leading to the incident
  • following issue of the appropriate letters to the registered installer who performed the work leading to the incident and CORGI
  • where following inquiries with the landlord a current and satisfactory landlord's gas safety record is produced. A copy of the safety record should be sent to the tenant.

Or, refer the papers to the Band 2:

  • with the appropriate witness statement where a landlord's gas safety record is not produced
  • where the gas safety record is unsatisfactory
  • where the witness is reluctant to complete a statement.
