Biological monitoring services

Biological monitoring is a way of assessing chemical exposures by measuring the chemical or its breakdown products in a biological sample (usually urine, blood or breath).

It’s particularly useful where chemicals can be significantly absorbed through the skin and where controls rely upon the use of personal protective equipment, such as gloves and masks.

Biological monitoring is used in exposure assessment to check that:

  • control measures are working
  • work practices are protective
  • training is understood and followed

Our case studies (on National Archives) illustrate some of the situations where it has been useful.

Getting started

There are things to be considered before starting a biological monitoring programme including:

  • defining the sampling protocol
  • consulting the workers
  • managing the results
  • deciding how the results will be acted on

Training

HSE offers free guidance on setting up a biological monitoring workplace scheme. We run a training course, Biological monitoring for chemical exposures at work or you can get in touch for further information.

Ordering biological monitoring tests

All our biological monitoring tests include bottles, packaging and return UK postage in the price of analysis. Many of our test kits and services can be ordered online while others are only available by contacting us.

Available tests and prices

We provide biological testing and monitoring for:

You can also get in touch if you need help with your order.

Guidance on laboratory procedures

You can order the Green Book: Guidance on laboratory techniques in occupational health which is a handbook of practical advice for customers of our testing and monitoring services.

Interpreting results

Once you have received your results, review them and decide if any further action is required. There are guidance values set by HSE and others to help put your results into perspective. You also need to tell the individual workers who provided samples their own result. Remember that the results are sensitive personal data and should only be shared with others according to the consent agreed by the worker.

Bespoke analysis and research projects

As well as our standard tests we are also able to offer bespoke analysis and undertake research projects. Biological monitoring can be used to assess both occupational and environmental chemical exposures. Globally, biological monitoring is being widely used in public health.
