Flooring: What makes floors slippery?

Empty canteen

Generally floors are only slippery when they have some form of contamination on them.

How can you tell if your floor is likely to be slippery?

Very smooth floors, that look shiny, will be slippery when contaminated.

Very rough floors, that feel sandpaper rough, are unlikely to be slippery when contaminated.

For all other floors, you can’t tell by look or touch, you have to test them.

Practical guidance on floor selection can be found in the good practice guide and the stop slip in kitchens information pack which are available in the resources.
