Case 318 - Apartment balconies not to be used for washing and storage

The enquirer recently moved into rented accommodation with large (half enclosed balconies), however all residents have been sent a letter saying that balconies should not be used for hanging washing, storing large plants or bicycles due to health and safety.

Panel decision

When properties have balconies it is reasonable to assume they are there to be used and it is difficult to understand why a ban on certain uses of the balconies has been put in place. The panel’s view is that this is a misuse of "health and safety" as an excuse for banning the use of balconies for activities which would detract from the overall appearance of the property. Tenants deserve a proper explanation.
