Case 277 - Ambulance Service refused a cycle helmet for training purposes which had suffered an impact due to health and safety

The enquirer had a motor cycle helmet which had suffered an impact and so could not be used for motor cycling. He offered it to the Ambulance Service for training use. They refused it due to health and safety reasons.

Panel decision

Health and safety legislation does not prevent the donation of potentially useful training equipment. In this case the ambulance service was concerned that the helmet might be contaminated from the incident that caused the damage, and already had sufficient helmets for their training needs, but didn't explain this in a way that showed appreciation for the thoughtful offer made. Simply referring to 'health and safety rules and regulations' doesn't explain anything, and this offer deserved a better reply.
