Case 197 - School sports day has been postponed due to dew on grass

Issue

The school had planned to run a sports day for 3-4 year old pupils in the morning – followed by activities for older pupils in the afternoon. The morning event was postponed due to dew on the grass.

Panel decision

The overall view of the panel is that cancelling the event for small children was a disproportionate response Even if grass conditions were slippy this could have been avoided by some simple precautions such as a slight delay to the start or changing the running order rather than cancellation. A great pity that these young children lost an opportunity for some outdoor fun with "health and safety" being offered inappropriately as an excuse.
