Case 192 - Repairs to college desks and chairs must be carried out by a contractor

In house maintenance personnel are not permitted to undertake repairs to college desks and chairs owing to risk of being sued. Equipment repair must be contracted out.

Panel decision

There are no health and safety regulations which would require maintenance work of this type to be contracted out. The equipment needs to be kept in a good state of repair and the maintenance can be done by anyone with appropriate skills and the right tools. Management should state the real reason for insisting that maintenance must be contracted out.
