Case 181 - Employer prohibits use of cycles on ‘work’ related journeys on health and safety grounds

Issue

Employer prohibits use of cycles on ‘work’ related journeys.

Panel decision

Health and safety law does not stop people from using bikes for work-related journeys and there are many organisations where cycles are provided specifically for work use – postal service and police are good examples. It would appear that this employer has assessed the associated risks and concluded that it is a risk it does not want to expose its employees to – this is a matter of company policy though not a legal requirement.
