Case 127 - Requirement for employer to retain copies of DSE examination forms


The enquirer was asked by their employer to provide a form completed by his optician following an eye test. The employer said they needed the form for health and safety purposes even though the optician had not charged for the eye test.

There is no requirement under health and safety legislation for employers to keep records of their employees' eye tests. The employer may want to keep copies for management of information purposes and it would be helpful if they gave a more detailed explanation of their reasons rather than just citing health and safety.
