Case 75 - Food retailer told enquirer leftover food could not be made available to staff or to charities due to health and safety reasons
The enquirer alleges that a major food retailer disposes of £15,000 worth of food each week. He feels that this food should be available to staff at a reduced price, or to charities, but has been advised that this is not possible due to health and safety reasons.
This is not an issue covered by health and safety regulations.
There may be issues associated with food safety, but it is unfortunate that the retailer has used that catch all "health and safety" label to cover a decision made for another reason. It would be better if the retailer correctly explained the reasons supporting their decision.
