Case 36 - Cafes and restaurants refused to allow mother to heat baby food "for health and safety reasons"

Issue

The enquirer raised the issue of places like cafes and restaurants heating up baby food or supplying hot water to feed her baby. She was often refused with the answer given "for health and safety reasons we can't, because if it burns their mouth etc..." The enquirer felt that as a parent they would know to check the temperature of the food/milk before feeding your baby.

Panel decision

There is no health and safety regulation which prevents a café or restaurant from helping mothers prepare/heat up food for their small children. Whether or not they choose to provide this service is a matter of company policy regarding customer service and they should not be using health and safety as an excuse to hide behind.
