Case 21 - Local authority will not manually collect rubbish from wheelie bins on grounds of health and safety

A local authority will not manually collect bagged rubbish out of wheelie bins on the grounds of its responsibility for the health and safety of its employees

Panel decision

Wheelie bins are designed to be emptied automatically by a lifting machine and there can be problems for workers if they have to empty them manually. In this case, the local authority has made a decision not to use wheelie bins based on the cost of supplying the bins and the machinery needed to empty them, not because of health and safety
