How we work

The health and safety system in Great Britain aims to ensure that risks in the changing workplace are properly managed. The Foresight Centre target our activity where we can have greatest impact to contribute towards the delivery of HSE's mission. We identify emerging challenges and opportunities and consider their potential to affect health and safety. When HSE's futures capability is combined with its unrivalled knowledge and expertise of health and safety, it can help Great Britain to tackle the anticipated problems of tomorrow, today.

The Government Horizon Scanning Programme team define horizon scanning as follows: "Horizon scanning is about exploring what the future might look like. to understand uncertainties better. It is not about making predictions, but systematically investigating evidence about future trends. Horizon scanning helps government to analyse whether it is adequately prepared for potential opportunities and threats. This helps ensure that policies are resilient to different future environments."
