Causes of non-fatal injury

In 2011/12 over 4700 injuries injuries were reported to HSE (83% of these were 'over-3-day absence' injuries and 17% 'major' injuries). These injuries accounted for a quarter of all manufacturing injuries. Around 90% of these injuries occur in food manufacture, the remainder in the drinks sector.

The graph below represents an analysis of a typical year's injuries. Manual handling and slips/trips injuries combine to cause over 50% of all food and drink manufacture injuries. Although other categories such as falls from height and hit by moving vehicle have smaller percentages, injuries from such causes are often more severe.
