STSU and Local Authorities
STSU serves HSE and Local Authorities. Many of the key industries we deal with are largely under local authority enforcement, or span both HSE and local authority enforcement boundaries.
STSU's remit covers the entire service industry sector apart from motor vehicle repair, waste and recycling, care homes and steel stockholders. Half the UK working population is included.
We seek to work with local authority representatives when setting priorities and our work plan for the year. Key bodies are the Local Authority Coordinators of Regulatory Services (LG Regulation) and the LG Regulation (formerly LACORS) Policy Forum, which includes representatives from local authorities across Great Britain.
Our key areas of work in which local authorities are involved are:
- supporting the topic-based safety programmes (Workplace Transport, Falls, Slips and Trips) and the Inspectors and EHOs working in these areas
- industries such as road haulage and warehousing, retail, hospitality and catering, cleaning, and entertainment and leisure.
There are occasions when STSU and the Local Authority Unit (LAU) work alongside each other, such as:
- supporting the work of the main HSE / local authority partnership committee – HELA, and any “task and finish groups” formed to take forward particular items of work
- dealing with official correspondence and parliamentary questions.
