Case Study 5: Stortford Interiors
Ensuring a holistic health and safety culture at Stortford Interiors
Stortford Interiors is a well established specialist interior architectural contractor, working mainly in the London area. Senior managers in the company have driven a number of important Health and Safety improvements in recent years, including independent monthly site audits, a near miss reporting system, and start right briefings at the beginning of each work day.
The company wanted to ensure that health and safety remained a high priority, to consistently ensure high standards of protection for its workers, and to improve the engagement of site based staff in health and safety practices. Using the diagnostic tool at Step 1 of LWIT, showed the company that worker engagement was an area that could improve.
- Stortford interiors used lessons from Step 4 of LWIT to increase the accessibility and visibility of leaders in the company, out on site. Site managers increased their participation in handover meetings, and the Managing Director gave a presentation that is included in new workers inductions.
- The issue of dust on site was used to communicate to the workforce the commitment of the management team. A 'Ditch the broom' campaign was launched, to increase awareness and improve dust control.
- Site managers were trained in face fit testing of dust masks. The company anticipates this being available on all its sites, within a few months.
- Stortford Interiors adopted an online Information Management System, IMS, to help manage health and safety. After experience of LWIT, forms in this system were simplified and streamlined. 37 toolbox talks held on the system were translated into key Eastern European languages
- The near miss cards used on site were upgraded to Site Safety Observation Cards. In June 2014 the fifth version of this was in place. Developments of the design leading to improvement in use and quality of feedback received from the cards.
- Site managers are encouraged to innovate in health and safety. On one site a site manager decided to have plaster board cut off site – eliminating three quarters of the site cutting previously required. This reduced dust, and saved time cleaning up.
- The company sees evidence that workers are more engaged, more often challenging unsafe practices and more visibly involved with the company to maintain good health and safety practices.
- In the 13 months of this LWIT project, no reportable accidents occurred, compared with three the previous year.
