A young person, 16 - 18 years old, must be employed in a shipyard for at least six months before they can do work on staging or any part of a ship where they are liable to fall more than 2 metres, or fall into water in which there is a risk of drowning. Regardless of age, the provisions of the The Work at Height Regulations 2005 would also apply. As shipbuilding is classed as an industrial undertaking, any work by young people below 16 years in a shipyard could only be undertaken as part of a properly approved programme of work experience.
