Health and Safety in the Waste Management and Recycling industries - Contacts

General enquiries

For general enquiries on health and safety issues in waste management and recycling, the first contact should be to HSE's Infoline.

The following bodies have responsibilities for Waste Management and Recycling premises.

for activities in the retail sector and for many issues of public concern regarding environmental and some health and safety issues:

Local Authorities: Usually these matters are dealt with by the Local Authority's Environmental Health or Services Dept.

for matters concerning the protection of the environment:

for health and safety at work issues:

Health and Safety Executive

Site-specific guidance

For guidance and advice on local site-specific issues, contact can be made direct to your nearest HSE office or Local Authority (LA) office (see local phone directory). HSE is responsible for enforcing safety legislation in most waste management and recycling workplaces except recycling activities carried out at retail sites.

If the recycling activity is depositing material for recycling in bins left on retail sites and/or baling and compacting on these sites the LA should be contacted, usually the Environmental Health or Services Department.
