Creating a new page

This page gives a step by step guide to creating HTML pages in the HSE new branding

Prerequisites

You will need the following to create new pages for website or intranet:

Choosing a page layout

The HSE web standard comprises 3 dreamweaver templates, and a set of colours. Before you create your page, you must decide what template to use, and what colour scheme your page will employ

Choosing a template

All pages in the HSE web standard use the same banner(also called the "header") and footer.

There are three page layouts to choose from, and each has different intended uses.

More information, and examples of how the three pages look, is on the templates page.

Do it! #1

To create a page, right-click the template "HSE_3_column_2004" in Dreamweaver, and use the command "New from Template". You can also use HSE_2_column_2004 and HSE_1_column_2004.

Setting the Colour Scheme

Checkpoint

You must by now have installed the Dreamweaver extension "HSE Colour Scheme selector", which is available for download.
[Instructions for installing Dreamweaver extensions]

Your choice of colour scheme is dependent on the sort of page that you are producing.

Most pages have the maroon (default) colour scheme, with the following exceptions:

There are other colour schemes available. The assignment rules for these are in the process of being revised, and will appear here shortly.

Do it! #2

Save the page that you created above (in Do It #1). Now, click the purple "HSE" logo on your "insert" menu (it appears on the "common" tab within this menu).

A dropdown box will appear. Select the colour scheme that you require from the dropdown list.

You should only select the colour scheme once per page.

Troubleshooting

  • I cannot find the HSE icon in dreamweaver
If you cannot find the icon, then open the "Insert" menu from the menu bar. You can run the colour scheme selector by selecting "hsecs" from the bottom section of this menu.
  • I cannot see the "hsecs" entry on the "Insert" menu
This implies that you have not succeessfully installed the "HSE Colour Scheme selector".
  • I have run the colour selector but my page has not changed colour.
Don't panic. Save your page, and press F12 to open it in a browser. If the colour scheme doesn't show in this page, then contact your technical advisor, or the web team.

What next

The next step is to place your content on the page, and format it using the styles available.
