Definition Lists

Definition lists are a feature of XHTML which will see increased use given the decreased use of tables. You should use a definition list where you have a natural 2 column table, such as a glossary, or simple ruleset

Simple definitions

Page Element
Description
Banner
The name given to the collection of page elements at the top of the HSE web standard from the top of the page down to the bottom of the last coloured bar. The banner is the most noticeable element of the HSE branding, and carries the most obvious indication of whether it is a topic, sector, community or core branded page.
Bookmark
The core element of navigation within a site section. The bookmark is situated on the left hand side of the page and is always positioned up against the bottom of the banner. Bookmarks do not appear on "one-column" pages
Footer
The footer appears at the bottom of every page, and is part of the core branding. The footer contains generic links to core site pages, such as copyright and terms & conditions
Gutter
Beneath the footer is the gutter. This is a section of purely whitespace at the end of the page, which allows users to scroll a long page some way up the screen for more comfortable reading.
Lifelines
The so-called "Lifelines" appear at the top of the page, and give generic links to core website pages, such as "Home", "Help" and "Site Map".
Search box
The search box is position on the top righthand side of the screen, and allows gives a site-wide search facility. The words "Search HSE Website" appear for both accessibility reasons, and to assist HSE employees to distinguish between the Internet and Intranet.
