Statistics Branch
HSE Statistics Branch is located in the Analytical Services Division of the Chief Scientific Adviser's Group. We support HSC/E’s priorities by providing statistical and epidemiological data and advice on ill health and injuries. The Branch has three main functions:
Customer & Programme Support
We lead the provision of statistical advice to HSE and others. Specifically, we provide:
- Statistical support to HSE’s Strategic Programmes (as part of analytical support to the programme teams)
- Advice on existing and future targets and progress measurement
- Support to other customers, inside and outside HSE (including webpages and publications).
Sources and Delivery
We manage and develop statistical sources and produce analyses relating to these. Specifically, we are responsible for:
- Surveys – e.g. the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and associated Self-reported Work-related Illness (SWI) surveys, and the Workplace Health and Safety Survey (WHASS)
- Other sources – e.g. RIDDOR injury statistics and THOR ill health surveillance schemes
- Enforcement statistics – relating to HSE and Local Authorities.
Epidemiology
We examine longer-term ill health and injury issues, maintaining links with external experts. Specifically, we carry out:
- Hazard and risk assessment – e.g. into whether or not there are risks to health from working in the semiconductors industry
- Advice and mandatory work – e.g. on concerns about occupational risks that are reported in the scientific literature or media
- Support to relevant programmes – e.g. the programme addressing reductions
in risk from chemicals in the workplace.
