Notes:

  • p  Provisional
  • Source: RIDDOR - Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995
  • The information available under RIDDOR includes three categories of severity of injury to employees and the self-employed: fatal injuries, defined major injuries and other injuries leading to more than three days absence (over-3-day). There are two categories of severity of injury for members of the public: fatal injuries and non-fatal injuries that cause a person to be taken from the site of the accident to hospital.
  • * It is difficult to compare current data with previous years due to both changes in some of the legal interpretations at the Incident Contact Centre (ICC) and a change in the quality checking procedures. A key factor that has contributed to the increase in the number of reported injuries in 2008/09 has been a change in the interpretation of guidance on reportability of accidents in educational establishments. The increase in reported injuries in schools accounts for approximately 3 400 additional records. In addition, fewer checks have been undertaken on the reportability of incidents to members of the public in local authority-enforced premises. This is important because any incidents identified as being non-reportable under the RIDDOR regulations are removed from the count. Based on knowledge of the error rate for this year and the scale of the checks compared to previous years an estimate has been made of the effect of the reduced checking. This estimate shows that that there are approximately 740 LA records included in the 2008/09 total that in previous years would have been excluded.
