Mesothelioma deaths - Latest figures up to 2007
The latest national statistics on mesothelioma mortality, produced by the Health and Safety Executive, were released on 28th October 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
This release presents descriptive statistics of mesothelioma mortality in Great Britain up to 2007.
The key facts are:
- The total annual number of deaths from mesothelioma has increased from 153 in 1968 to 2156 in 2007. There were 1812 male and 344 female deaths in 2007.
- Deaths occurring now reflect industrial conditions of the past. Male deaths below the age of 55 have been falling since the mid 1990’s.
- The latest projections show that the expected number of mesothelioma cases among males is predicted to increase to a peak of 2038 (90% prediction interval: 1929 to 2156) around the year 2016.
