Industry classification in injury reporting to HSE uses the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). Prior to 1994/95 the SIC80 classification was used. From 1995/96 onwards industry the SIC92 classification has been used. However, in 1995/96, HSE conducted an exercise to convert injury data received in reports for the years 1991/92 - 1994/95 collected under SIC80 to bring them in line with SIC92; this exercise only covered the five main industry sectors of SIC92 (agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing, extractive and utility supply, manufacturing, construction and services). This means that:
For employment estimates before 1999/2000 for employees in Great Britain to 2-digit SIC level the STES was used; for employees in Great Britain to a 4-digit SIC level the Annual Employment Survey (AES) was used. The AES was an annual ‘snapshot’ of employment of the STES rather than the average of four quarters. In 1999 the ABI replaced the AES, and became the survey that provided estimates of employees in Great Britain to 4-digit SIC level. Employment figures to a 2-digit SIC level are still based on the STES but are benchmarked against the ABI.
