Statistics
HSE no longer collects data on infections from the surveillance schemes OPRA and SIDAW. The last year of data collection was 2006, and this data is shown in tables THORI01, THORI03 and THORI05. The annual estimates from these surveillance schemes substantially underestimated the true incidence of occupational infections in Britain. There were a number of reasons for this. First, the occupational relatedness of many infections would not be recognised or recorded. Second, many infections would not be referred to the Health Protection Agency (HPA) for investigation and therefore would not be reported to SIDAW. Third, the surveillance schemes did not have complete coverage of all relevant physicians.
Statistics and other information are available through the HPA web site by clicking on infection type of interest and following links to epidemiological or surveillance information.
Additional information and guidance on work-related infections is available from the HSE Biosafety website
