The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has today (7th October 2007) launched a policy statement entitled 'Striking the balance between operational and health and safety duties in the Police Service'. The statement, a result of collaborative work with the Police Service, sets out how that balance can be achieved.
HSE, the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland will now work together, with other stakeholders including the National Policing Improvement Agency, to ensure that police operational guidance reflects the agreement outlined in the 'Striking the Balance' statement.
During the financial year 2006 to 2007, HSE inspected seven police forces in England and Wales. In the year 2007/2008 they inspected a further seven police forces. The inspections assessed compliance with relevant health and safety legislation notably the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. A report of the key findings and recommendations has been published.
Developed between the Police Service and HSE to ensure cooperation between the parties where enforcement responsibilities interface or overlap.
