In England and Wales, the Home Secretary is answerable to Parliament and the public for the provision of an efficient and effective police service.
In Scotland most of the police powers and functions are devolved to the Scottish Parliament, and Scottish Ministers will answer to the Scottish Executive on these. However, there are some areas for which legislative responsibility remains with the UK Government including national security, terrorism, firearms and drugs, and the Home Secretary remains answerable on these issues.
