The major accident rate for the rubber industry is still above that for manufacturing industries overall.
In 2009-10, manual handling accounted for most of the reported RIDDOR injuries:

| Type of RIDDOR | Percentage |
|---|---|
| Manual handling | 31% |
| Contact with moving machinery | 16% |
| Hit by moving or falling object | 14% |
| Slip or trip | 13% |
| Other | 26% |
However, contact with moving machinery and being hit by a moving or falling object caused more than 50% of all the major injuries:

| Type of RIDDOR | Percentage |
|---|---|
| Manual handling | 9% |
| Contact with moving machinery | 28% |
| Hit by moving or falling object | 26% |
| Slip or trip | 13% |
| Other | 24% |
The rubber industry has a fairly high percentage of accidents caused by contact with moving machinery and this increased slightly in 2009-10 (13 Major 19 O3D).
There is no particular type of machinery that stands out as the main cause but calendars, lathes, saws, tyre-presses and moulding machines all feature more than once.
