OTO 2000/057 Assessment of strengthening clamp from the Viking offshore platform : Phase I
The Viking AD platform was decommissioned in 1998 and one of the
grouted strengthening clamps was obtained by HSE for structural
integrity assessment. The objectives of the first phase of this
assessment were : compilation of a visual record of the clamp and its
dimensions at the end of service; assessment of marine growth, in
terms of thickness, density and distribution; corrosion survey;
non-destructive assessment of the grout layer between the clamp shell
and the jacket tubulars; crack detection of all welds and measurement
of residual stress in the vicinity of the welds of the tubulars;
disassembly of one half of the clamp and measurement of stress in the
studbolts. Concludes that although subject to considerable marine
fouling, the clamp had suffered no significant corrosion during its
12 year immersion in seawater. The dimensions complied with the
relevant "as built" drawing.
