Explosion loading is significantly different from other forms of loading normally considered in the design of platform topsides because of its dynamic nature, the response of the structure and uncertainties associated with the design parameters (input loading, material characteristics, strain rate effects, structural response, etc).
The effect of high strain rate on material properties has been
studied for many years. past work has indicated that the yield point
and ultimate strength are affected by the rate of straining.
Generally, the higher the rate, the higher the yield stress, until
the ultimate stress is approached without yielding.
