Recent increases in the efficiency of open-flued, natural draught boilers have resulted in a reduced flue buoyancy effect, making them more susceptible to wind induced flue flow reversal. The aim of the present work was to investigate the effect of house ventilation strategies on flue flow reversal behaviour. This study was complementary to those made at BRE during the previous two winters, using similar types of boilers, flue systems and test houses. Data was collected for five different mechanical and passive ventilation strategies over a complete winter season. The results show that the house ventilation strategies cam have significant effects on the flue flow performance of open-flued, natural draught appliances.
