This report describes a work programme to investigate the long-term reliability of domestic carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, initiated as part of a joint industry project (JIP) on carbon monoxide issues. A large number of commercially available models, covering a range of detector technologies, were initially assessed using laboratory test equipment designed for the purpose. From the results, a suitable number were selected for further long-term field trials. After one year of service, only one of these models is both currently available with the UK and still performing satisfactorily. Several appropriate recommendations are made.
