Studies into the 2- 4 hour shift phenomenon

Examination of data held originally by British Rail, and latterly by Railtrack, has suggested that there appears to be a disproportionate number of accidents and (potential or actual) dangerous occurrences in the period between 2 and 4 hours from the start of the shift (regardless of the start time of the shift). There appears, from the British Rail/Railtrack data, to be no obvious interpretation or explanation of this so-called 2-4 hour shift phenomenon.
