HSE responds to Coventry Telegraph article "Allesley Festival floats procession cancelled - due to red tape"

Article:

Response date:

Dear Sir,

I read with interest your article entitled "Allesley Festival floats procession cancelled - due to red tape" (14 June 2011), and was saddened to discover that the organisers had decided to call the parade off.

The Health and Safety Executive has very little to do with the regulation of volunteer-run events - we're here to save lives, not to stop people enjoying themselves.

I can completely understand Jan Burton's frustration at being given a 54-page form to complete. A straightforward risk assessment is all that is needed in most cases.

I hope the procession will come back bigger and better than ever in future - there is certainly no health and safety reason for it not to.

Yours faithfully,

Paul Billinger
Principal Inspector for Coventry
Health and Safety Executive
