HSE responds to Accrington Observer letter: "Safety first..."

"Safety first..." - Accrington Observer, 8 April 2011
Response date:
05 May 2011

Dear Editor

In response to your reader, who asked why the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has not taken control of the chimney at the Rhyddings Mill site in Oswaldtwistle.

We work closely with local councils across the UK to protect workers and the public from health and safety dangers. HSE is responsible for the majority or British workplaces, and local councils oversee other sites.

We understand that Hyndburn Council has already taken action over the Rhyddings chimney, issuing an official notice requiring the owners of the site to either demolish or repair the chimney.

Our inspectors will continue to work closely with Hyndburn and other councils to ensure lives are not put at risk.

Yours faithfully

Dorothy Shaw
HSE Principal Inspector, Lancashire
