Dear Sir,
I would like to set the record straight regarding the Health and Safety Executive's involvement in the March Burn Bridge debate ("Width limit imposed on busy village bridge", 6 August). HSE was approached by a local resident asking us to intervene; I advised that this was a matter for Northumberland County Council, not HSE.
It is therefore not accurate to say that HSE expressed 'concern' about the bridge: we have not made any assessment or given any opinion. We referred the matter to Northumberland County Council for their consideration as it was within their remit and not ours.
Yours faithfully
David Cole
