Dear Sir,
Simon Jenkins is wrong to claim that the Health and Safety Executive always gets involved in industrial disputes ("This strike wasn't about jobs...", 5 October). It is also worth noting that HSE has no regulatory responsibility for the London Underground.
Far from taking sides between employers, employees and unions, we only get involved in industrial disputes in a very small number of cases, and we operate entirely impartially. We seek to ensure that laws to prevent workplace injuries and ill-health are enforced sensibly and proportionately.
Yours faithfully,
Geoffrey Podger
Chief Executive
Health and Safety Executive
