HSE responds to East Anglian Daily Times (Essex) letter - 'employees have a basic right to be protected'

20 January 2010

Dear Sir,

Contrary to the views expressed on your Letters page (20/01/10), employees have a basic right to be protected from risks at the workplace. There has been a 73% fall in work-related deaths since 1974 when the Health and Safety at Work Act came into force. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) campaigns actively for safer and healthier workplaces. Much of the damage that is done by others in the name of health and safety displays a lack of common sense that we reject and highlight in our Myth of the Month (www.hse.gov.uk).

Yours,

Heather Bryant

Regional Director, East, South East
