HSE Director for Scotland sets the record straight over Lollipop man

Dear Sir,

I was really sorry to read today's, Monday 05 October 2009, front page story -"Banned from giving sweets to kids" - and editorial comment.

All too often health and safety is conveniently used as an excuse to ban events or activities. There are no health and safety regulations which ban high-fives or sharing chocolates.

Real health and safety is about saving lives, managing risk and enabling people to enjoy themselves. We promote a common-sense approach to real risks associated with workplaces.

As far as I can see this story has nothing to do with health and safety.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Paul Stollard
