HSE announces appointment of new Chief Statistician

E043:09 15 May 2009

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced the appointment of its new Chief Statistician, Kate Sweeney. Kate, who is a Chartered member of the Royal Statistical Society, was appointed to the role following an open competition. Kate succeeds John Hodgson who will continue to work at HSE in a role in the epidemiology unit.

Kate's previous experience includes working at the Office for National Statistics and at the Department for Work and Pensions where she oversaw employment and unemployment statistics. Kate has also worked for Unilever as a market analyst in a role providing support to its marketing division.

At HSE, Kate has been providing analytical and statistical support to the injury reduction programme and HSE's field inspectors for the past three and a half years.

Speaking about her appointment Kate said: "The role will involve the production and management of statistics related to health and safety at work and supporting HSE in using this evidence to both target and evaluate its activities.

"It is a great opportunity to ensure that HSE continues to use accurate statistical information and that HSE's efforts are based on sound evidence."
